Lately I’ve become far more mindful when it comes to protection from the sun, particularly when I’m on the water. As you can tell from my pictures, I’m bald, so my head is particularly susceptible, though wearing a hat can offer great protection. There are other parts of the body they are also very exposed, including the face, neck, and hands. I’ve worn long sleeve SPF shirts for years, and last year I started wearing various SPF Buffs to protect my neck and face. This summer I looked around for a quality pair of SunGloves to protect my hands, and I found them in the SolarFlex SunGlove from Simms.
I do a lot of trolling, many days for hours on end, and my hands are just sitting there exposed the sun with one hand on the tiller, and one on the rod. As I catch fish, my hands are constantly getting wet, and wiped, so any sunscreen I may have on quickly comes off.
I’ve had these gloves on a few times, and they are simply awesome. They have open fingers so I can still work equipment, line and lures. The first two fingers are almost completely covered as they are the most exposed. My one worry was that my hands would be hot, but I find that not only are they not hot, the gloves actually help cool my hands. Like a good life vest, you forget that you are even wearing them, and not having to put chemicals on my hands means I don’t have to worry about any of that transferring to my lures and affecting the bite. The only challenge is that while I was getting used to them, I did get a hook or two caught in them, but I got the hang of how to handle my lures in short order and had no further issue. If you are thinking about making an investment in some sun protection for your hands, give them a look. I purchased mine at a local SAIL store with no regrets.
