Planning for the North: Attiwapiskat 2018

Posted on: January 28th, 2018 by Scott Mills

After dozens of fishing trips, including many fly in destinations, I still get the same thrill of anticipation when planning for the spring trip, but this year there is some added excitement. Many things have come into alignment to allow our group of 4 anglers to not only take a fly in fishing trip (which for many would be a bucket list experience in of itself), but to head to one of the more remote destination in Northern Ontario, the Attiwapiskat River.

We’ll be flying once again with Hearst Air Services, with whom various group members have completed 3 previous trips. We have flown to Hilmer Lake, McLeister Lake, and back for a second trip to Hilmer Lake. For these three trips we drove to Hearst before boarding our short flights of about 20 minutes. This spring though, we’ll be flying from the same plan base on Carey Lake, but but there is no 20 minute flight in our future. No, we’ll be flying for over 200 Miles (2 hours) over some of the most rustic and wild scenery Ontario has to offer. To put it into perspective, the Attiwapiskat is almost 750 KM long, and empties into James Bay!

We’ll be driving to Hearst on May 24th, and making the flight in the following day on Friday May 25th. We will have 7 full days and night to explore this amazing part of Canada, all guided by an onsite Native Guide who has grown up on the river. This trip will be special for a number of reasons.

So no the planning has begun. We’ll have to be mindful of the weight of our supplies. When you are flying a group 200 miles, the cost of feeling the plane is significant, so every pound has an impact. We’ll be working hard to keep our total weight to under 100lbs per guy. We’ll also need to evaluate our tackle and gear to be sure it is both right for the fishing (river vs lake), but to be sure it is the right stuff to handle big fish (tough problem to have). Stay tuned folks, a full report will follow what I expect to be an epic trip.
